What I choose? Why I choose?

Heard about the Jam Study? An interesting study by Sheena Iyengar,an Indian American psychologist at Columbia University. She talks about how there are different things like culture, religion, country et al which affect the choices that we make in our lives.

Well the next time you are at a mall and are going crazy buying or unable to choose, remember its all programmed in you because of who you are, what you believe in, where you are from and so on.

While Americans allow their children to make choices which are as basic as what cereal to eat, Indians make choices for their children. This is a cultural message and while Americans are training their children to think of themselves as the most important thing, the Indian family teaches the child to take other people into consideration. “It all boils down to a debate of mind versus heart and gut versus reason,” she explains.

Makes me think, what if this study is conducted after a couple of decades. Will the Indian children still show similar choices influenced by their upbringing. Are we making different choices now to influence their choice in life….
